Highlights of the Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta 2017

June 12, 2017

Continuing our support of the event and the superyacht sailing circuit, we were delighted to be back in Porto Cervo as sponsors for this year’s regatta which coincides with the Yacht Club’s own 50th anniversary.

The Pantaenius team joined 17 racing superyachts in Sardinia earlier this month for the Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta, organised by the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda and Boat International.

Close racing between 37m Escapade (Dubois/Fitzroy Yachts) and 32.5m Ribelle (Malcolm McKeon Yacht Design/Vitters Shipyard) through the first few days meant that as the superyacht Class went into the final day of racing, everything was to play for with this duelling pair and the 45m Saudade (Tripp Design/Wally), all vying for a podium position.

It was the first regatta outing for the recently launched Ribelle. Her experienced owners, Salvatore and Paola Trifiro, are no strangers to the circuit however and have been delighted with the yacht's performance, “We had only two days of training but the boat is responding beautifully, it was fantastic weather, a fantastic crew, it is a great start with our new boat.”

Softening winds in the latter half of the week meant a change in the calculations, with racing switching from a time-on-time method to a time-on-distance. As is often the case, the expert Race Committee managed to find enough breeze between the islands of the archipelago however to create a course each day.

In the Wally class, with 10 competing boats, Magic Carpet 3 raced consistently well and was the Class victor at the end of the week, but only narrowly beating Galateia to the post.

For the Superyacht class, 45m Saudade was the event winner, with her owner adding his name to this enviable piece of silverware for another year.

Both winning Wallys made changes last winter to optimise performance. Magic Carpet 3 is a little lighter than last year and Saudade has been adorned with a new keel, rudder, bowsprit and rigging.

Sailing safe as well as fast remains the priority, and we remind regatta entrants that participation in events like these requires appropriate insurance cover, in addition to the customary regatta third party risk insurance. The large number of additional people on board means careful choice of the correct personal liability insurance and verification that a sufficiently high sum is insured, is paramount. Pantaenius has invaluable experience in this field and we are very happy to be able to offer our assistance to all yacht owners interested in competing or those who have already fallen in love with the thrill of superyacht racing.
